How Brief Uses AI
Brief Capital is an AI-powered investment agent. Artificial intelligence is not a feature of the product — it is the product. We believe in full transparency about how it works, what it can do, and where its limits are.
What the AI Does
Market Analysis
Brief’s AI analyzes market conditions daily, including:
- Price data, technical indicators (EMA, RSI, MACD, volume), and market regime classification
- News catalysts, earnings events, and macroeconomic signals
- Sector rotation patterns and correlation analysis
Trading Decisions
The AI makes discretionary trading decisions within the boundaries of your financial persona:
- Identifies entry and exit opportunities across four strategy modes (momentum, swing, mean reversion, defensive)
- Sizes positions based on conviction, volatility, and your risk parameters
- Manages stop-losses, take-profits, and portfolio-level risk constraints
- Executes trades directly through your brokerage account via API
Daily Briefings
The AI writes your daily briefing — a structured, plain-language summary covering the big picture, what it did and why, key discipline moments, and a portfolio snapshot. Written for sophisticated people, not quant traders. No jargon, no spin.
Natural Language Understanding
When you send instructions like “go conservative for the next 6 months” or “avoid energy stocks,” the AI interprets your intent and adjusts its strategy accordingly. These adjustments are logged and reflected in subsequent trading decisions.
AI Models and Providers
Brief is built on the following AI infrastructure:
- Reasoning Engine: Anthropic Claude — used for market analysis, trade reasoning, briefing generation, and instruction interpretation
- Agent Runtime: A proprietary agent framework that handles scheduling, tool execution, and memory management
- Market Data: Polygon.io — provides real-time and historical price data, technical indicators, and market metadata
- Research: Perplexity — used for news catalyst discovery, earnings analysis, and market sentiment
Your financial persona and trading data are processed within your isolated compute instance. They are not shared with AI providers as training data.
Guardrails and Safety
Every trade passes through a deterministic guardrail system before execution. These guardrails are not AI — they are hard-coded rules that cannot be overridden by the AI model:
- Position Limits: No single position can exceed your defined maximum (default: 15% of portfolio)
- Approval Thresholds: Trades above your dollar threshold require your explicit confirmation via iMessage before execution
- Cash Reserve: A minimum cash position is always maintained (default: 10%)
- Sector Exclusions: Sectors you’ve excluded are blocked entirely — no override path exists
- Instrument Restrictions: No options, futures, leveraged ETFs, or margin trading in the current version
- Regime Adjustment: In high-volatility markets, position sizes are automatically reduced
If a guardrail blocks a trade, the AI cannot execute it — regardless of its analysis or conviction.
Limitations and Risks
We are transparent about what the AI cannot do:
- It cannot predict the future. AI models identify patterns and probabilities — they do not have foresight. Markets are inherently unpredictable.
- It can be wrong. Trading decisions are probabilistic. Losses are a normal part of active portfolio management. The AI will make losing trades.
- It operates on available data. The AI cannot account for non-public information, sudden geopolitical events, or data feed outages.
- It is not a fiduciary. Brief Capital is not a registered investment adviser and does not owe you a fiduciary duty. The AI acts within your defined parameters, but you bear ultimate responsibility for your investment outcomes.
- AI models can hallucinate. Large language models occasionally generate incorrect or fabricated information. Trading guardrails mitigate this risk, but it cannot be fully eliminated.
Your Oversight
You are never locked out of your own portfolio. At all times, you can:
- Review every trade Brief has made, including the AI’s reasoning
- Override any strategy by sending a natural language instruction
- Pause trading entirely
- Disconnect your brokerage account
- Trade directly in your Alpaca account alongside Brief
Brief is a tool. You are the owner. The AI manages your portfolio — it does not own it, and it does not replace your judgment on the decisions that matter most.
Data and Training
- Your individual financial data is never used to train AI models for other users
- Your trading history and persona are stored in your isolated instance, not in shared infrastructure
- Aggregated, anonymized performance metrics may be used to improve the platform’s overall strategy quality
- We do not share your financial data with Anthropic, Perplexity, or any other AI provider for model training
Updates to AI Systems
We continuously improve Brief’s AI capabilities. When material changes are made to the AI models, trading strategies, or guardrail systems, we will:
- Notify you via briefing or email before changes take effect
- Document changes in your dashboard
- Never reduce guardrail protections without your explicit consent
